Sturgill Simpson, Orville Peck, Red Shahan headline country surge

For lovers of country music, these next couple of weeks in Central Oregon are an embarrassment of riches.

Let’s start at Hayden Homes Amphitheater (344 SW Shevlin Hixon Drive, Bend), where Sturgill Simpson (Thursday) and Orville Peck (Tuesday, Sept. 24) will battle to see who can stretch the boundaries of country music further into lesser-charted territories. The former blends psych, heavy blues and bluegrass into his roots-rock, while the latter colors his classic country with ’60s pop, surf guitar and velvety crooning.

As if that’s not enough, the venue will close its 2024 season on Sept. 28 with Dwight Yoakam and The Mavericks. Visit Bendconcerts.com.

Meanwhile, Silver Moon Brewing (24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend) will host two bands that play an energetic brand of country-rock ’n’ soul on back-to-back nights: Idaho’s Aaron Golay & The Original Sin on Thursday, followed by Oregon’s Eli Howard and The Greater Good on Friday. If you want to go for three nights in a row, head over to Volcanic Theatre Pub (70 SW Century Drive, Bend) on Saturday night for a show by Red Shahan, a singer-songwriter from Texas who makes incredibly catchy Americana music. On the horizon: One excellent country band Silverada — formerly known as Mike and The Moonpies — will play the Domino Room (51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend) on Friday, Sept. 27, and another, Shane Smith & The Saints, will play General Duffy’s Waterhole (404 SW Forest Ave., Redmond) on Saturday, Sept. 28. Both are from Austin, Texas and both are on the same kind of upward trajectory mapped out over the past decade by artists like Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Turnpike Troubadours.
