A 12-year-old Pilot Butte Middle School student brought a loaded handgun to school Monday and was arrested “without incident” after reporting the gun to a teacher, police said.
A Bend Police Department school resource officer confiscated the gun after the student reported having the weapon to a teacher. The teacher immediately took the student outside and called for assistance.

“With the (resource officer) being on hand within 30 seconds to a minute of the staff member calling, that weapon was out of the student’s hands and they were able to continue the school day,” said Sheila Miller, spokesperson for the Bend Police Department.
The student was taken to the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center following the arrest. The seventh-grader appears to have been acting alone, police said. Bend Police are investigating how the student obtained the firearm.
“I know this information is alarming to hear,” said Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook in an email to school families. “It’s deeply upsetting to me and our staff at Pilot Butte who work every day to make it a safe and welcoming place for our students. I also know that our students and families will have many questions about today’s incident. This is an active investigation, and we are still seeking answers. When we are able, we will provide more information for you.”
Cook said the district’s student services would be available to support students and families, and counselors were available for students and staff immediately, and for the coming days.
