Bend Police find firearm used in attempted carjacking

- A handgun allegedly used in an attempted carjacking on Thursday was located.
The firearm used in an alleged attempted carjacking Thursday has been located as Bend Police officers continue their investigation of the incident.
The attempted carjacking happened Thursday evening at around 7:30 p.m. near Reed Market Road and Third Street in Bend when Matthew Carlton Drake, 24 of Klamath Falls, allegedly pointed a gun at a 48-year-old Bend woman and demanded that she leave her vehicle. When police arrived, the Drake was gone and the vehicle was in the same place the victim had left it.

An hour later, Bend Police located Drake in the parking lot of an AutoZone Auto Parts along South U.S. Highway 97. He was taken to the Deschutes County jail on suspicion of robbery, theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle. Drake was also charged with the menacing and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.
Over the weekend, Bend Police continued searching for the firearm allegedly used by Drake in the attempted carjacking and found video surveillance of Drake attempting to enter a home on Southwest Hayes Avenue. After searching the area, officers found the handgun on the property.
Drake’s arraignment is scheduled for Friday.
