The Christmas holidays are here, which means high school basketball tournaments are just a few days away.

This week, Central Oregon teams will play in their final regular-season tournaments before conference play begins in early-to-mid January.

The highest concentration of local basketball players will be playing in Bend at the annual Oregon Holiday Hoopfest Friday through Sunday at Caldera and Summit high schools.

Five of the 16 teams in the boys tournament are from Central Oregon. Summit, Mountain View, Crook County, Redmond and Caldera will all compete in the three-day tournament. Mountain View won the tournament a year ago, beating Caldera in the championship game.

The 16 teams are broken up into two separate eight-team brackets. The East Bracket will be played at Caldera High and will include Redmond, Crater, Sheldon, McNary, La Salle, Crook County, Forest Grove and Caldera.

Redmond, winners of five straight games and champions of last week’s South Coast Les Schwab Holiday Classic, has an intriguing matchup in the first round against Crater, another Class 5A state tournament hopeful.

Summit will host the West Bracket, which will have Lake Oswego, Scappoose, South Eugene, Mountain View, Willamette, Hillsboro, Newberg and Summit.

The Holiday Hoopfest should provide some quality basketball, as the majority of the teams reached the state playoffs last season.

Between the four Intermountain Conference teams, Crater and La Salle, the 16-team field features six teams that reached the 5A playoffs a year ago.

Crook County and Scappoose were 4A playoff teams, while McNary and South Eugene were 6A playoff teams.

The Ridgeview girls will play in the SCTC Holiday Classic starting Thursday at Stayton High School. The Mountain View girls will play in the Pacific Office Automation Holiday Classic in Portland beginning Friday. The Madras and Sisters boys and girls teams are scheduled to play in the Sisters Tournament beginning Thursday, Jan. 2. The Caldera girls team will also play in the Sisters Tournament.

The Trinity Lutheran boys and girls teams are set for the Cascade Christmas Classic at Cascade Christian High School in Medford starting Thursday.
