Ring in the new year with live music

Published 2:30 pm Wednesday, December 25, 2024

New Year’s Eve can mean different things to different people: Gathering with loved ones. New beginnings. Marking the passage of time. Making a big change. An excuse to party. Dancing till dawn. Going to bed early!

New Year’s Eve also offers yet another chance to go out and see live musicians playing, you guessed it, live music. There are a number of places to do that across Central Oregon on Tuesday night, and below are four of them (plus some bonus run-up shows for those of you who like to extend your holidays a bit):

Multiple nights of music at McMenamins

As it does every year, McMenamins Old St. Francis School (700 NW Bond Street, Bend) will count down to New Year’s Even with free live music in Father Luke’s Room every night until the big one. The lineup includes:

Thursday — Groovy folk ‘n’ soul artist Pete Kartsounes

Friday — Forward-thinking traditional bluegrass band Skillethead

Saturday — 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s cover band Superball

Sunday — Bluesy Americana act Megan Alder and the Woods

Monday — Soulful folk-pop band Alicia Viani Trio

Then on Tuesday — the big night, New Year’s Eve — McMenamins will host concerts in two rooms: Portland-based funk-rock band The Quick & Easy Boys in the movie theater and high-energy local rockers Leadbetter Band in Father Luke’s Room. Doors open at 8 p.m., the music starts at 9 p.m. and a $20 advance ticket — $28 day of show — gets you into both.

Funk ‘n’ soul at the Domino Room with Diggin Dirt, The Sextones

If one highly competent, party-friendly funk ‘n’ soul band from down south is good, then two is better, right? That’s what’s going down Tuesday at the Domino Room, where dancing on that famous domino-themed floor is the goal for the evening.

In this case, “down south” means Humboldt County, California, home to seven-piece band Diggin Dirt, and Reno, Nevada, home to The Sextones, a tight-as-a-drum quartet. The former is a little more intense and rough-hewn, the latter a bit more smooth and laid back. Both of them are excellent at what they do, and together, they’re a perfect pair for New Year’s Eve.

Diggin Dirt and The Sextones: 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, doors open 8 p.m., $30, Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, midtownballroom.com.

A seven-band bash at Silver Moon Brewing

Silver Moon Brewing is one of the busiest spots for live music in Central Oregon, and that won’t change Tuesday night, when seven bands will perform between, oh, say dinner time and the official beginning of 2025.

The whole thing is curated by Jeshua Marshall, who books music at Silver Moon and has been putting on New Year’s Eve shows in Bend for many years, stretching back to his days in Larry and His Flask. Here’s the schedule for this year’s big night:

6:30-7 p.m. — Thought Box

7:15-7:45 p.m. — The HardChords

8-8:30 p.m. — Aage Birch

8:45-9:15 p.m. — Mari and the Dream

9:30-10 p.m. — Chiggi Momo

10:15-10:45 p.m. — J Meast

11 p.m. till after midnight — Jeshua Marshall & The Flood

Jeshua Marshall’s 5th Annual NYE Bash: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, doors open 6 p.m., $18, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.

Company Grand at The Belfry in Sisters

In Sisters, a music-centered celebration of the new year is happening Tuesday at The Belfry, where local good-times band Company Grand will fill the room with funk, blues, rock and R&B. The nine-piece band, which includes a vibrant horn section, released its second album “Let It Rain” in 2023 and celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year.
