Apple Vision Pro: When it arrives and what comes in the box

Published 7:51 am Monday, January 8, 2024

After unveiling the Vision Pro headset in June of 2023 with a promised launch of early 2024, Apple is finally shedding some more light on availability. With a starting price of $3,499, Vision Pro will be available in Apple Stores across the United States and online to purchase on February 2, 2024—just about four weeks from now.

Like the iPhone or Apple Watch, a preorder window will begin on January 19, 2024, at 5 AM PT/8 AM ET. Dubbed as the entrance to the “era of Spatial Computing” by Apple, the Vision Pro headset is packed with a boatload of hardware that, from my early testing—three times wearing it and using it—will deliver a compelling experience that will be familiar for anyone who’s used another Apple device.

It doesn’t come cheap, but Apple also confirmed what you’re getting for the $3,499 price tag. For starters, Vision Pro will ship with 256GB of onboard storage, which should be plenty to run through many apps and power experiences like viewing Photos, watching a film, playing a game, or even using a third-party app. As a refresher, Vision Pro is powered by the Apple-made M2 chip—the same one featured in MacBooks and iPads—and offers each a 4K display. The release notes that Vision Pro will start with 256GB of storage, but Apple hasn’t yet shared the cost for additional storage capacities.

Additionally, each Vision Pro comes with a few accessories, including a Solo Knit Band and a Dual Loop Band, to help you get the most comfortable fit. The Solo Knit option is simply a strap that goes around the rear of your head, while the Dual Loop Band adds an additional strap for the top of your head, which can be used to ensure a secure fit so that Vision Pro doesn’t slide down.

After all, it’s a computer you’ll wear on your head across your face. To help with the fit and to get the most out of the Vision Pro, you’ll also get a cover for the front of the headset, a light seal, two light seal cushions, a battery, a USB-C cable, a USB-C power adapter, and a polishing cloth.

For glasses wearers like myself, considering you need to remove them to use the Vision Pro, Apple did confirm how much the Zeiss Optical Inserts will cost. Reader lenses will be $99, and prescription lenses will be $149—both come with a pair and will be sold online with a prescription required. It’s considerably less than some early estimates as well.

All in all, we finally have a launch date, what comes in the box, and more about the process for prescription lenses. I haven’t had the chance to fully test all that the Vision Pro can do, but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s pretty compelling, and the sheer quality of the experience is high-bar, a step above more affordable headsets for sure.

You can see my initial hands-on experience with the Vision Pro from right after it was announced in June of 2023 here, as well as my experience shooting “Spatial Video” and viewing it back on the headset here. I’m still eager to try out third-party experiences, FaceTime, see the promised “EyeSight” feature, pass through with a Mac, and get a sense for how it can be used every day.
