- Deschutes County Sheriff Kent Van der Kamp
Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp posted on Facebook Sunday, ticking off accomplishments since his November election and writing: “Thank you for your trust and support.”
But the problem is it is not clear how much he can be trusted, how much he will be able to restore community trust.
Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels announced Monday that van der Kamp has given false testimony in more than one criminal case. Gunnels placed him on what is called the Brady list, which means van der Kamp should be disqualified from being called as a witness. Cases in which van der Kamp was involved are being reviewed. It may not mean all those cases need to be dismissed, because often a case does not hang on the testimony of one individual. It could make a difference in some cases.
“I am deeply disappointed by the recent decision by District Attorney Steve Gunnels to place me on the Brady list,” van der Kamp responded in a news release on Monday. “While I respectfully dispute the reasoning behind this action, I understand the seriousness of the situation and the impact it may have on the Sheriff’s Office and the public’s trust.”
It would be more disappointing if Gunnels did not place van der Kamp on the list or failed to disclose it.
Van der Kamp is already under investigation for possibly violating professional standards by the state’s Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. That is apparently from when he applied to be a deputy in Oregon and did not disclose his time at the La Mesa Police Department in La Mesa, California. La Mesa officials had said he should have been fired for misconduct, according to records.
Law enforcement work is challenging and dangerous. Law enforcement officers also can deprive a person of their liberty and take a person’s life. It’s vital that they have the public’s trust. Van der Kamp now has much more work to restore trust in law enforcement.
