Central Oregon Community College’s Latinx Fiesta Celebación has been canceled as organizers cite an “abundance of caution” and cancellations of similar cultural events. The event was scheduled for Saturday.

COCC partners with the Latino Community Association and the Father’s Group, who have canceled events such as Latino Fest in Madras and the Juneteenth celebration in Drake Park. The COCC event’s organizers noted that they made this decision in alignment with these organizations. The Latino Community Association was concerned about possible immigration enforcement.

Christy Walker, dean of equity and wellbeing for the college, said organizers want to be as prepared as possible and are proceeding cautiously. Though Saturday’s event is canceled, organizers are planning future events to celebrate Latinx culture. She wants to make sure future events are joyful so participants don’t have to worry. The safety of participants, visitors, students and staff is the college’s priority, she said, and organizers appreciate the community’s support and understanding.

The event would have included dancing, crafts, storytime, games and more. It was organized by COCC’s Latinx Student program, the Latinx Club and with community partners, the Deschutes Public Library and High Desert Museum.

“We recognize the importance of cultural celebration and the opportunity this event offered to uplift and share Latinx voices, stories and traditions. To those who were planning to attend — we see your excitement and we share your disappointment,” said a press release by the college.
