Editorial: Federal government hurts disaster recovery and clean water

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management says $169 million that should be coming to Oregon from the Federal Emergency Management Agency is frozen.

“When disasters happen and assessments have been made those dollars need to be flowing back to states,” Gov. Tina Kotek said Tuesday. “I’m not going to back down from the fight when the federal government is holding back money from the state.”

Also consider Mapleton, an unincorporated community in Lane County. The town’s water supply is in trouble. It applied for a $2.7 million federal grant from FEMA to help the city put in place a 300,000-gallon water tank for storage to ensure an emergency water supply, as reported by KEZI. That grant program was canceled this year.

There’s more work needed in little Mapleton — maybe $20 million in water infrastructure improvements to replace pipes.

Many municipalities are struggling with needed infrastructure. The federal government moved away from being counted on to pick up the tab long before the Trump Administration.

But the cancellation of the grant program that could have helped Mapleton is something new. Clean water is not bloat.
