The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with America’s State Parks to offer free guided hikes in state parks throughout Central Oregon on Monday, which is New Year’s Day.

For those interested, guided hikes led by rangers and volunteers will take place at parks including Smith Rock State Park, La Pine State Park and Prineville Reservoir State Park. These hikes, an Oregon tradition since 2012, offer community members the chance to learn about park history, geology, wildlife and plants. Parking fees will also be waived.

Smith Rock State Park

Park officials will lead a 3-mile hike along the canyon rim, which will offer views of the Crooked River. The hike begins at 9:30 a.m. from the Welcome Center yurt, and registration is required.

Trail conditions include gravel and dirt, and hikers can expect to climb 450 feet of elevation gain. The hike is not suitable for baby strollers, but dogs on a leash are welcome. To obtain additional information, call 541-548-7501.

Recreational immunity ruling poses questions for Oregon trail access

A La Pine State Park ranger and a wildlife specialist from Think Wild, a wildlife rehab and education center, will lead a 3-mile hike along the relatively flat Cougar Woods Trail. Officials are asking participants to prepare for potentially icy trails. The hike will start at 10 a.m. at the South Loop Campground. Prineville Reservoir State Park

Prineville Reservoir State Park rangers are leading a hike along the Rocky Raccoon Trail, a 1.5 mile round-trip trail.

The hike begins at 10 a.m., meeting at the gate of the Lower 66 trailhead. The trail has a slight elevation climb but is considered easy. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
