Bend Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at a home in the Tetherow neighborhood in southwest Bend late Monday evening.

The residents, who had moved into the home just a week prior, heard unusual sounds coming from the attic. They called 911 after discovering a fire and all three residents safely evacuated the home. Fire alarms did not sound due to the fire’s location in the attic.

Fire crews contained the fire within the attic, preventing it from spreading throughout the rest of the home. The homeowners, who were still unpacking their belongings, now face an estimated loss of $225,000, according to officials from Bend Fire & Rescue .

After an initial investigation, the fire department determined the fire originated behind the home’s gas fireplace, and likely ignited due to a failure or malfunction in its installation. The homeowners’ insurance company is expected to investigate further to pinpoint the exact failure. Meanwhile, the three family members are working with their insurance company to find housing during the rebuilding process.
