The Sun Bowl will feature two quarterbacks making their 2023 starting debut as Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman announced Monday he’s opting out of the game.

Hartman, a sixth-year senior, is the third Notre Dame starter to opt out of the bowl to begin preparation for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Oregon State also has a first-time starting quarterback for 2023, though familiar with the role, in Ben Gulbranson. The fourth-year sophomore started seven of eight games during the 2022 season, and was the Las Vegas Bowl most valuable player. Gulbranson was the next man up for the Sun Bowl after quarterbacks DJ Uiagalelei and Aidan Chiles went to the transfer portal.

Notre Dame is likely to go with Steve Angeli, a sophomore who completed 19 of 25 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Hartman passed for 2,689 yards and 26 touchdowns in leading Notre Dame to a 9-3 record this season. It was his only season at Notre Dame. During a career that included five years at Wake Forest, Hartman passed for 15,656 yards and 134 touchdowns.

The Sun Bowl is set for 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.
