The Summit boys water polo team competes in the third-place game against Hillsboro at the Oregon High School Water Polo State Championships at the Chehalem Aquatic Center in Newberg on Saturday.

The Summit boys and girls water polo teams each finished in third place at the 5A/4A Oregon High School Water Polo Championships at the Chehalem Aquatic Center in Newberg on Friday and Saturday.

“We got to bring home some hardware, which is always fulfilling,” said Summit girls water polo coach Kayanna Heffner. “I think they did really well. We kind of set out at the very beginning of the season with the goal of getting third. It was an achievable goal, but it definitely came with challenges.”

The Storm girls fell to Hood River 14-8 in the semifinals on Friday, then defeated Ashland 6-5 on Saturday in the third-place game.

“A lot of those important games were really close, so I think it was a good way to show that when you put your mind to something and work hard, it will come with results,” Heffner said. “All those games were close. And in the (girls) semifinals, we were tied until the third quarter.”

The Storm boys lost to Hood River 9-7 in Friday’s semifinals, then defeated Hillsboro 9-7 in Saturday’s third-place game.

Summit won the state championship last year, but graduated seven seniors from that boys team.

“The boys understood there were big roles to fill and they put in a lot of time and effort to be prepared mentally and physically for this and I think they did an incredible job,” said Summit boys water polo coach Madison Berggren. “I’m very proud of this team. The team dynamic this season was one of the best I’ve gotten to coach and I think that it’s a big part of why we were able to finish in the top three.”

Several Summit water polo players were named to the all-tournament team.

For the Storm girls, Iben Orton was selected for first-team all-tournament, while Mackenzie Scott, Kepler Orton and Maty Hornbeck were named second-team all-tournament.

For the Summit boys, Lars Heraeus, August Erber, David Stonich and Bram Gerken were named second-team all-tournament.

“We entered the post-season with an excitement and desire I could see growing all season, and they leaned into it and excelled,” Berggren said. “While we didn’t finish first like we hoped, we ended our season proud and are ready for another chance next year.”

Hood River is the girls 5A/4A state champion, beating West Albany 13-10 in the title game. West Albany claimed the boys 5A/4A championship, defeating Hood River 11-8 for the title.

Barlow won the 6A boys championship on Saturday, edging Lake Oswego 11-10 in three overtimes. Lakeridge took the 6A girls title with an 11-7 victory over South Eugene.
