It’s been a relatively quiet summer concert season over at the Century Center in Bend, which should make the neighbors who’ve lodged noise complaints about the venue happy. Or happier, at least. Maybe. Who knows? Maybe nothing but a music-less west side and small-town silence will do the trick.
Anyway, the band Collective Soul is playing there Thursday night. If you’re old enough to remember when they broke big in the 1990s, you no doubt remember their mega-hit “Shine” (“whoa-oh-oh-oh, heaven let your light shine down”) and their slightly less mega but still big hits “December” and “The World I Know.”
But what you may not know is that these guys got popular the old-fashioned way: They recorded a demo in the basement with the intention of selling the songs to other bands. That demo ended up at a couple of radio stations, which started playing “Shine” and listeners loved it. As a result of its popularity, Collective Soul signed a record deal, sold millions of copies of their debut album and landed on MTV.
They’ve been writing, recording and playing shows ever since. Their 11th album, “Vibrating,” came out in 2022. SPIN Magazine called it a “masterful pop-rock effort.”
Collective Soul: 7 p.m. Thursday, doors open 6 p.m., $45 in advance, $55 at the door, Century Center, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, bendticket.com.
