It really is difficult to explain Moon Hooch to someone, or why a Moon Hooch show is worth attending.

This is largely because on paper, Moon Hooch sounds like it shouldn’t work. It’s three guys from New York City who play highly rhythmic, dance-oriented music using two saxophones and a drum kit. The members met while attending jazz school, and they got their start playing in subway stations for tips from passers-by.

They produce a swirling maelstrom of sound that is complex and strange and vibrant and slightly disorienting. It’s also pure dance-floor fuel, even for people who see Moon Hooch’s unconventional setup and do not expect to dance.

Last but not least: They’re deeply interested in environmental causes and hold regular tree-planting gatherings across the country. The next one is Oct. 15 in Templeton, Pennsylvania if you’re in the area.

If not, you can catch Moon Hooch closer to home on Sunday night at Volcanic Theatre Pub.
