From the editor’s desk: New staff, new content for The Bulletin

The Bulletin sign in front of the offices in Bend.

We are pleased to welcome Morgan Owen to the newsroom as our general assignment, growth and transportation reporter.

Morgan recently moved to Bend from Los Angeles, where she worked for Times Media Group as a reporter and editor. She has covered everything from controversial environmental projects to a strange case of jellyfish washing up on Venice Beach. Her favorite topics to write about are social justice and breaking news, but anything with a good story will do, she said.

Morgan moved to Bend with her partner to enjoy the great outdoors. She grew up in a small ski town in Southern California, so Bend immediately felt like home, she said. In her free time, she enjoys taking her dog, Moose, on hikes, motorcycle camping on her Ducati Nightshift and sampling beers at local breweries.

As a general assignment reporter, Morgan hopes to learn about Bend and become more involved in the community.

Our former general assignment reporter, Joe Siess, moves to Redmond to support the Redmond Spokesman operation along with Editor Tim Trainor. The Bulletin and Spokesman often share content but also have a friendly competition on getting scoops.

Having these two experienced reporters on our staffs will deepen our connection with our communities. We see nothing but upsides with these additions and hope you enjoy their reporting.

A new, local column

If you haven’t noticed yet, please check out GO! Magazine editor David Jasper’s weekly column “Dropping In.” Jasper is a consummate skateboarder, so the name is appropriate in both skateboarding terms and for a column as he weighs in on the fun of living in Central Oregon. David has that writer’s voice that readers can immediately relate to, as if he’s speaking directly to you. And, he anticipates what you might be thinking from one sentence to the next. It’s insightful, entertaining wordplay with a dash of light sarcasm. They are fun reads on topics ranging from saving house spiders to pondering if Bendites should really call themselves Bendites. You can find his columns here.

Mail delivery of the paper

As you may have read, The Bulletin has shifted from home delivery of the newspaper to same-day mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service. Our publisher Heidi Wright details the whys and wherefores in a Sunday column on the opinion page. Please give it a read.

And thanks for reading and please support our local journalism by subscribing here.
