Death Cab for Cutie returns to Bend Saturday

Death Cab for Cutie plays Saturday at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend.

There’s no denying that the big show at Bend’s Hayden Homes Amphitheater this week is headlined by country music superstar Chris Stapleton, who sold out the venue in a flash last February, setting off a frenzy for high-priced tickets on the secondary market that continues to this day.

With no reserved seating to take up space, I believe the Stapleton show will draw the single largest crowd in the amphitheater’s 21-year history.

I am here, however, to remind you that there is a concert on Saturday night, too, and it features Seattle indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie, who have played in Bend several times.

The reason I bring them up is this: Death Cab’s most recent album, 2022’s “Asphalt Meadows,” is probably their best in 14 years, maybe longer. It’s packed end to end with Benjamin Gibbard’s sweet ‘n’ sour melodies and highly relatable existential handwringing, but also more grit and noise and weird ideas and punch than the band’s most recent records.

To be clear: Grit and noise and weird ideas are a good thing, and they give “Asphalt Meadows” a turn-of-the-21st-century Death Cab vibe. Which is a very good vibe, and one worth catching live this weekend.
