Newport Avenue corridor opens in Bend after two years of construction

The Newport Avenue corridor in west Bend will open to all forms of travel by the end of the day Friday, May 26, according to the city of Bend.

Stretches of Newport Avenue have been closed intermittently since 2021 while the city rebuilt the roadway, installed new infrastructure to replace, in some cases, 100-year-old systems, built a new roundabout and improved safety and connectivity for drivers, cuyclists and pedestrians. The project extended along Newport Avenue from College Way to Ninth Street and on Nashville Avenue to the Deschutes River and included stormwater work to protect the river.

The corridor will be open to two-way traffic starting Friday, “but travelers should expect intermittent lane shifts into June to accommodate finishing touches such as irrigation and landscaping work,” the city said in a news release.

The city said construction ended one month behind schedule. It encountered staffing and supply chain challenges spurred by the pandemic.

The city is inviting residents to celebrate the corridor’s completion at a ceremony from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 9, on Nashville Avenue between Columbia Street and Harmon Boulevard, with parking available on Harmon Boulevard.
