The national Do Not Call Registry is a great idea that can make people who sign up for it feel like fools.

Sign up and the telemarketing calls keep coming.

The registry apparently does work — in some ways. And there are related laws that help as well. “Billions of unwanted calls to American consumers are being blocked each year,” the Federal Communications Commission asserts.

Some of those billions wriggle through.

“Legitimate telemarketers consult the (Do Not Call) list to avoid calling both landline and wireless phone numbers on the list,” the FCC says. So you can assume that telemarketers that call anyway are not worth your time.

Oregon Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden have both worked on bills to crack down on robocalls and texts. Tell them what is in place is not working. Give them — a call.
