The newly established Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame will have a familiar face in its inaugural class.
Steve Prefontaine, an Oregon legend for distance running, was announced on Thursday as a member of the first class for the Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame, which is being put together by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Prefontaine was raised in Coos Bay and attended the University of Oregon from 1969 to 1973. During his time as a Duck, Prefontaine won three NCAA titles in cross-country and four titles in the 3-mile/5,000 meters in track and field. He was the first college athlete to win four NCAA titles in a single event.
At some point in his career, Prefontaine owned every American record between the 2,000- and 10,000-meter races, as well as between the 2-mile and 6-mile races.
Outside of his collegiate career, Prefontaine was a two-time Oregon state champion in cross-country and a three-time track and field state champion while competing for Marshfield High School.
Prefontaine won a gold medal in the 5,000-meter race during the 1971 Pan American Games.
He competed in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, finishing fourth in the 5,000-meter race.
The induction ceremony for the Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame will take place at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene. The event is scheduled for June 6, just days before the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place at Hayward Field.
