- The Astoria Column glowed purple on Friday night for the Astoria High School Class of 2020.
While closed to the public because of the pandemic, the Astoria Column glowed Friday night to honor Astoria High School seniors.
The column stands 125 feet atop Coxcomb Hill in Astoria and offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Oregon and Washington coastal mountain ranges, the Columbia River and the city of Astoria.
Built in 1926, the column’s artwork broadly represents historical events in the Pacific Northwest. The art was created using sgraffito, an Italian art form that combines carving and painting into the concrete structure, according to the column website. The artist’s sketches of the artwork, along with related historical details, can still be viewed — despite the column being closed — by visiting
