Former Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will not pitch during the 2020 baseball season.
His agent, Wilfredo Polidor, tweeted Saturday evening that the former Cy Young winner would opt out of the season because of concerns about COVID-19.
Hernandez, 34, was on a minor league deal with the Braves and listed on their initial 60-man player pool. He was expected to battle for a rotation spot in camp this spring, and made four starts for Atlanta before baseball was shut down in March.
He went 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in spring training, allowing three runs on 13 hits with 14 strikeouts and five walks across 13 2/3 innings.
In 15 seasons with the Mariners, Hernandez compiled a 169-136 record with a 3.42 ERA across more than 2,700 innings, logged 2,524 strikeouts and tossed baseball’s most recent perfect game in 2012.
But, his productivity dipped in his later seasons in Seattle, he dealt with lengthy injuries, and he ultimately wrapped up his tenure with the club in September, finishing the season with a 1-8 record and 6.40 ERA in 15 starts.
The 2019 season was the final of his seven-year, $175 million extension with the Mariners, and his contract was not revisited.
