A Bend cardiothoracic surgeon is selling his 10,566-square-foot home overlooking five Cascade mountain peaks for nearly $4.3 million.

The asking price is among the highest in Bend, said the listing agent, Brian Ladd, a broker at Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty.

The home is owned by Angelo Vlessis, who with his wife traveled to Italy to scope out architectural designs to create a home resembling a villa. The couple plan to remain in Bend, Ladd said.

“What I find spectacular about this house is how well they built it and how well-thought out it was created,” Ladd said. “So many high-end homes that are built are about creating awe, not about comfort. So many high-end homes are not comfortable places to live.”

The five-bedroom, 5½-bathroom home features 72 windows. It is on 4.16 acres, a portion of which is on the Deschutes River. The Bachelor View Road home also features an Italian villa courtyard with limestone columns, a foyer overlooking the river and mountains, a Fibonacci-inspired spiral staircase replicating the spirals found in nature, a theater room with a 102-inch drop down screen, a 15,000-bottle wine cellar and guest suites.

High-end homes are unique to the owners who build them, said Kim Gammond, Central Oregon Association of Realtors communications director.

“It’s harder to sell a bigger home,” she said. “People often build their dream home.”

For homes sold in May in all price ranges, the average time spent on the market was 110 days, Gammond said. For homes listed above $3 million, the average time on the market was 540 days, she said.

There’s a home with a basement basketball court in the Broken Top neighborhood listed at $6.9 million that has been on the market for 1,500 days, she said.
