Two snowmobile riders had to be rescued Friday evening after getting stuck in a canyon along a trail near the Kapka Sno Park in Bend, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Deschutes County Search and Rescue volunteers responded to the snow park and rode snowmobiles to the area of the stuck riders in a watershed along Bridge Creek Trail. Three search and rescue volunteers then hiked about 1 mile on snowshoes to the riders, identified as Bend residents Aaron De Moisey, 40, and Jeffrey Manfrass, 35.
The rescue crew reached the riders at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, and gave them snowshoes to walk back to the rescue crew’s snowmobiles. From there, the rescue crew gave them a ride back to the snow park.
The two riders told the rescue crew they were not necessarily stuck, but had decided to stop moving because they no longer felt safe from the hazardous terrain and snow conditions as nighttime approached, according to the sheriff’s office.
