You’re not the only one considering a last-minute gift for the outdoor type on your list. People were still perusing gear while holiday shopping at REI on Tuesday. Below, a sampling of the useful gifts we came across there.Photos by Ryan BrenneckeThe Bulletin

REI climbed its way to the top of Where to GO! to find new winter sports gear. The Seattle company has occupied the 28,000 square-foot former lumber mill powerhouse in Old Mill District since 2005. REI supplies outdoor pursuits of all stripes, but its winter gear selection is bar none, said sales lead Nathan Humphrey. REI stocks about a dozen snowboard brands and twice as many ski brands. The shop also carries more than 10 brands that make slope-specific jackets and coats. But it’s not just the expansive variety that has made REI the default destination for new winter sports gear.

“I would hope it’s because we offer honest, friendly help,” Humphrey said, adding that the ski service desk’s 24-hour turn-around time is a hit. Whether customers are new to winter sports or pack in 60 days on the snow each season, REI employees offer individually tailored help to make sure they have the right gear — not necessarily the most expensive gear, Humphrey said.

“We’re not trying to push them in a certain direction,” he said. “We want to make sure they get what’s right for what they going to do so they can enjoy the outdoors.”
