BOWLING

Bend High girls capture state title — Bend High took first place in the girls division of the OSUSBC (Oregon State chapter/United States Bowling Congress) championships, held Feb. 22-24 at Firebird Lanes in Salem. After two days of qualifying and a roll-off win over Silverton, the Lava Bears squad was the No. 6 seed out of 16 teams. Then, in double-elimination match play, Bend defeated Siuslaw, McKay and Silverton before beating top seed Henley to reach the final. The Lava Bears defeated No. 2 Crater for the championship. Members of the Bend High club team include Haley Hall, Mykiah Hill, G.G. Johnson, Katie Nickless, Eliza Peterson and Jessie Wiest, as well as Anona Francis and Zoya Hansen, both of Madras. The team is coached by Toby Cundell and Merri Chilcutt. The Bend boys team (Gabe Bowers, Aeron Burkhardt, Cameron Greener, Ryland Gustafson, Carson Hall, James Nickless, Devan Raguine and Zachary Zahniser) lost in two rounds of double-elimination match play. Bowers, representing Mountain View in state singles competition, rolled a personal-best 700 series to place second out of 103 bowlers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Two Saints named to all-tourney team — Scooty Gilbert and Matt Eidler were each named to the Class 1A all-tournament team after leading Trinity Lutheran of Bend to the state title game against Nixyaawii. Gilbert, a freshman, averaged 16.6 points per game in the Saints’ three games at the 1A state tournament in Baker City, while Eidler, a junior, averaged 13.3 points. Trinity fell to the Golden Eagles 59-42 in the championship game on Saturday night. The Saints held Nixyaawii to 37 percent shooting from the field, but they shot just 31 percent themselves. “If you told me we’d hold them to 37 percent shooting, I would have thought we’d be the victors,” said Trinity coach Kyle Gilbert. “We didn’t turn the ball over a lot. Overall, we just couldn’t finish some layups and put together a run.” The Saints made their first state tournament appearance in their fifth varsity season. “We did everything we wanted to do (this season),” Gilbert said. “We were 0-21 three years ago, and now we made the state championship game.” Nixyaawii, a Pendleton charter school that serves the Native American population, celebrated its first boys basketball state title. Junior Mick Schimmel led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and 13 rebounds. “It means everything,” Schimmel was quoted saying on osaa.org. “We grew up playing basketball our whole lives around that reservation. Basketball is pretty much our life on the reservation.”

Bend’s Bryan Brown, Mountain View’s Grant Jordan and Summit’s Jacob Tompkins were selected to the all-conference second team. Bend’s Jimmy Robertson and Justin Kerr, Mountain View’s Tony Adamo and Austin Fields and Summit’s Julian Mora and Evan Scalley all received honorable mention in a vote of the league’s coaches.
