Sunstone Organics of Springfield is recalling two lots of the herbal supplement kratom, which the company sells at five retail outlets in Bend, because of potential salmonella contamination.

Kratom is linked to past salmonella illnesses, but Sunstone Organics has not received any reports of adverse events related to the current recall, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration press release issued Friday.

The Oregon Health Authority investigated a case of salmonella bacteria in a Lane County resident who reported consuming Sunstone Organics kratom, spokesman Jonathan Modie said. The person’s leftover kratom tested positive. The bacteria was also found in subsequent tests of the company’s product.

The recalled products are White Vein Kratom Lot 119 and Maeng Da Kratom Lot 124A in capsules and powder form and in all sizes. Neither product is currently in distribution, but consumers who have them at home should dispose of them, or contact Sunstone or the retailer for a return, Sunstone co-owner Todd Holiday said.

The company lists five retail outlets in Bend: Hempies on Twin Knolls Drive, Parkway Deli on SW Division Street, K Market on NW Albany Avenue, News & Smokes on NE Third Street and US Market 350 on Lancaster Street.

“One of the problems with kratom, it is a raw product,” Holiday said. His company packages the ground-up leaf, which originates in Indonesia, he said. “We do test it. Our tests come back clean. There is the possibility that bacteria can continue to grow in it over time.”

Sunstone is addressing the issue by testing smaller batches, Holiday said. The company is also looking into adding a steam-based sanitation system, he said.

Last March the Oregon Health Authority warned about the potential for kratom to be contaminated with salmonella after two people became ill. One Oregon manufacturer later issued recalls in response to a multistate investigation.
