In the age of music downloads and streaming, most cities the size of Bend are lucky if they can support one brick-and-mortar record store. Bend has two — Ranch Records and Recycle Music — that help support the city’s busier-than-average music scene. Music lovers should make a point of stopping in Saturday for Record Store Day, an annual, international celebration of independent music stores launched in 2007.
Long-running Ranch Records hasn’t missed a Record Store Day yet, and this year is no exception. The store will open early at 8 a.m. and will be stocked with roughly 200 exclusive Record Store Day titles, clerk Phillip Sinclair said. Shoppers can also browse through a bin of half-off store selections while munching on free doughnuts and coffee (from Sweetheart Donuts and Bellatazza, respectively) and grooving to DJ Sorski. The store will be open until 9 p.m., but Sinclair recommended arriving early.
Recycle Music will once again go all-out with a full day of live music in the building next door. The show starts at 12:30 p.m. with a duo performance by Recycle clerk Dean Prescott and Tracie Schuman (wife of owner Keith Schuman), and continues past 6 p.m. with Deeks, David von Schlegell of Cosmonautical, The Kronk Men, Wayne Newcome of Problem Stick , Solo Viaje, Blue Vinyls and more. Snacks, exclusive Record Store Day titles and bargain-bin records and CDs will round out the event.
