Outlaws runner-up in Oregon West — The Sisters boys placed second in the 4A-3 Oregon West Conference district meet. Competing on their home track Thursday and Saturday, seven Outlaws automatically qualified for state. Brody Anderson, Ben Johnson, Hayden Sharp and Korbin Sharp won the 4×100 relay in 43.68 seconds. Anderson took first in the 400 in 50.43. Anderson, Hayden Sharp, Korbin Sharp and Skyler Larson placed second in the 4×400 relay in 3:35.81. Larson cleared 6 feet 2 inches to win the high jump. Garrett Kersavage cleared 13-0 to win the pole vault and took second in the triple jump at 40-11. Hayden Sharp placed second in the long jump, leaping 20-8. John Peckham finished second in the 3,000 in 9:08.15. Five Sisters girls automatically qualified for state. Emma Singleton won the 800 in 2:29.31. Kate Brown was second in both the 1,500 (5:18.63) and 3,000 (11:30.23). Hollie Lewis cleared 5-0 to take second in the high jump. Shelby Larson cleared 9-0 to win the pole vault. Samantha Silva placed second in the long jump, leaping 16-71⁄2. The 4A state meet is this Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

White Buffaloes qualify for state — Seven Madras athletes earned automatic berths to the Class 4A state meet. Competing in the 4A-2 Tri-Valley League District meet Friday and Saturday at North Marion, Leo Gutierrez won the boys 400-meter race in 51.61 seconds. Gutierrez, Omar Diaz, Nathan Rodriguez and Dalton Waldow finished second in the 4×400 relay in 3:34.53. Waldow took second in the long jump, leaping 20 feet 6 inches. Erik Boynton won the pole vault, clearing 12-5. Allen Jackson placed second in the high jump, clearing 6-0. Olivia Symons won the girls long jump at 16-3 1/4 and finished second in the 200 in 27.38.

BASEBALL

Bend High rallies for wild win — The Lava Bears scored nine runs in the final two innings to defeat McNary 10-9 on Saturday and complete a sweep of the Celtics in a Mountain Valley Conference doubleheader. Caden Mathisen hit an RBI double to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth and cap a five-run inning for Bend. McNary scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead. But in the bottom of the seventh, Tysen Scott and Reece Gordon each hit RBI singles, then sophomore catcher Kaleb Karpstein hit a game-winning two-run double off the center-field fence at Bend High. Players and coaches dog-piled in the infield in celebration, Bend coach Quinn Clair said. “We have had a tough time,” Clair said. “We’ve split with all the Salem schools. Jumping up from 5A to 6A, there’s a massive difference in the way that teams play. Every one of our losses this year is by one or two runs. So that was a super emotional win for us. It was our first sweep of a Salem school. To score nine runs in the last two innings was incredible.” Bend (7-4 MVC, 17-6 overall) has one regular-season game remaining at Mountain View on Tuesday and appears headed for the Class 6A playoffs.

Mountain View wins division at state — Mountain View claimed first place in the Medium Teams division at the Oregon High School Equestrian Teams state meet, which concluded its four-day run at the Deschutes County fairgrounds in Redmond on Sunday. Mountain View piled up 150 points in the individual events and 64 in the team events for a total of 214 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Lake Oswego’s 93 points. The North Valley District placed first among the eight districts in the competition, scoring 865 points to 863 for the second-place Northwest Division. White Buffaloes win district doubles tournament — Madras cousins Erika and Jessica Olivera defeated Philomath’s Lindsay Schell and Ella Skinkis 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday at Black Butte Ranch to capture the Class 4A Special District 2 doubles championship. White Buffaloes Tony Giron and Esteban Gomez placed second in the boys doubles tournament. The two Madras doubles teams will play in the 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Outlaws qualify for state — Sisters’ Nate Weber placed fourth in the Class 4A Special District 2 singles tournament, and the Outlaws’ Jed Kizzier and Isaiah Chapen finished fourth in the doubles tournament. The three Outlaws will compete in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Bend High hosts girls basketball camp — Players entering grades 3 through 9 for the 2019-20 school year are invited to attend a four-day basketball fundamentals camp June 17-20 at Bend High School. The Bend High girls basketball coaching staff and players will provide skills training at the camp, which will include age-appropriate half- and full-court games. Quinn Fettig, a Bend High graduate and a senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, has been named to the all-Liberty League men’s lacrosse second team. A defenseman for the NCAA Division III Engineers, Fettig finished second on the team in caused turnovers with 20; he also had 32 ground balls, a goal and an assist. … Bend High’s Kevin Collier was named Mountain Valley Conference girls tennis coach of the year after the MVC district championships last week in Sunriver. The Lava Bears placed third behind champion Summit and runner-up South Salem in the eight-team field.
