Day care homicide charges — The operator of a Eugene day care where a 9-month-old infant stopped breathing was arrested in connection with the death. Nicole Sumpter was in the Lane County jail Tuesday on accusations of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, criminal mistreatment and evidence tampering. William Cannon was found unconscious at the day care, Little Big Blessings, on Aug. 22 and died two days later at OHSU Hospital in Portland. The state didn’t disclose his death until March 5 after inquiries from The Oregonian newspaper. It’s unclear how prosecutors allege Sumpter’s actions led to the infant’s death.
Arrest after a drive-thru cognac swig — Authorities say a woman in the drive-thru of a Beaverton-area Taco Bell poured Hennessy cognac into the mouth of an employee — then was arrested by a police officer who happened to be behind her in line. The Washington County Sheriff’s sergeant was behind a car driven by Elianna Aguilar-Aguilar about 1:20 a.m. Saturday. Police say the driver reached out the car window and poured the bottle of cognac into the mouth of an apparently willing employee. The sergeant followed Aguilar-Aguilar, 23, out of the parking lot and pulled her over. She was booked into jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants. Police say the Taco Bell employee didn’t know the woman, and he said most of the cognac was spilled.
Massive manure dump in Tillamook Bay — A manure spill at the Port of Tillamook Bay has discharged about 300,000 gallons of treated liquid waste into waterways in the area. The manure had been held in an anaerobic digester tank, which breaks down dung into biogas that can be used for electricity and fertilizer for farms and agriculture. The manure is less harmful than raw sewage. State officials are conducting tests on water samples from Tillamook Bay and a tributary of the Tillamook River. They have not imposed restrictions on commercial and recreational shellfish harvesting. The spill was discovered Monday.
Bullet flies through dentist office window — Police say a woman was grazed by a bullet that came through the window of a dentist office in Grants Pass. Police responded to a shooting call Wednesday afternoon at Johnston Dental Offices. Police say officers determined a gun had been fired from a vehicle as it moved through the driveway at the office. Police say the round went through a window and grazed an elderly female patient in the torso. She refused medical treatment. Detectives were working to identify the vehicle and suspect.
