Hurricane prompts move of Boise State-FSU game — The college football season opener for Boise State and Florida State will kick off a few hours sooner and a little farther inland with discounted ticket prices because of the threat of Hurricane Dorian. Officials announced Thursday that the game will be played Saturday at Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee and start at noon (9 a.m. PDT), seven hours before it was originally scheduled to start in Jacksonville. Jacksonville officials, along with those from Florida State and Boise State, collaborated on the decision. The decision to move the game was made to keep fans away from the coastal region ahead of the storm making landfall.
Injury could be end of Seahawk’s career — The neck injury that landed Seattle cornerback Kalan Reed on injured reserve likely also ended his career, according to a report Thursday that was independently confirmed by the Seattle Times. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that Reed’s agent, Harold Lewis, said injuries to Reed’s third and fourth vertebrae caused numbing and “put him at serious risk if he plays again.” Reed, 25, had been competing for the Seahawks’ nickel cornerback spot but was placed in injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season. Reed apparently was injured in Seattle’s second preseason game of the year at Minnesota on Aug. 18, a game in which he played just six snaps.
Smith shines for Seahawks in final preseason game — Geno Smith appeared to lock up the backup job in Seattle throwing a pair of first-half touchdown passes before limping off with a minor knee injury in the Seahawks’ 17-15 win over Oakland. Smith threw a 39-yard TD pass to Terry Wright on Seattle’s opening possession and later hit Jacob Hollister — graduate of Bend’s Mountain View High School — on an 11-yard TD strike. Smith looked comfortable and poised running Seattle’s offense and seemed set to be Russell Wilson’s backup. But Smith had to be tended to on the field and walked off with a slight limp late in the second quarter after being sacked by Gabe Wright. Smith finished 4 of 7 for 107 yards and his health will be important as Paxton Lynch finished the preseason with a dud. Lynch was 1 of 7 for 4 yards.
Chargers edge Niners in last game of preseason — Cardale Jones led scoring drives on Los Angeles’ first four possessions in his bid to make the roster as the No. 3 quarterback in the Chargers 27-24 victory. Jones got the start while Philip Rivers and Tyrod Taylor rested and led the Chargers (1-3) to a pair of field goals and two touchdowns. He scored the final one himself with a diving 2-yard run , stretching the ball just inside the pylon. Jones played the first half, going 10 for 16 for 149 yards and adding 26 yards on the ground. Rookie Easton Stick threw two interceptions in the second half before leading a winning drive to Derrick Gore’s 11-yard run with 1:17 to play. C.J. Beathard threw one touchdown pass for San Francisco (3-1), but his best play might have been on a downfield block that sprung Jeff Wilson for a 41-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Beathard went 6 for 9 for 58 yards, connecting on a 21-yard score to a sliding Kendrick Bourne on his final pass of the night.

Record crowd watches U.S. women win friendly — Carli Lloyd had a goal and an assist in front of her hometown fans, and the U.S. women’s national team continued its post-World Cup victory tour with a 4-0 win over Portugal in front of a record crowd on Thursday night. The announced attendance of 49,504 at Lincoln Financial Field was the largest ever for a stand-alone friendly game for the U.S. women, breaking the previous mark of 44,028 set in Pittsburgh during the team’s 2015 victory tour. Tobin Heath, Morgan Brian and Allie Long also scored for the U.S., which has won 15 consecutive matches for the first time since 1996. Christen Press had two assists. The five-city domestic tour to celebrate the Americans’ fourth World Cup title, which they won in France this summer, began in Los Angeles on Aug. 3 with a 3-0 win over Ireland. It will continue with stops in St. Paul, Minnesota (Sept. 3), Charlotte (Oct. 3), and Chicago (Oct. 6).
