North Carolina folk rock darlings The Avett Brothers brought “True Sadness” to Les Schwab Amphitheater two years ago. On Tuesday, the quartet will bring the Les Schwab audience “Closer Than Together.” The group, led by titular brothers Seth and Scott Avett (sons of folkie Jim Avett, who has also played Bend before), has been riding high on the successes of ninth studio album “True Sadness” (2016) and its accompanying documentary, “May it Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers.” So it makes sense that the band re-teamed with “True Sadness” producer Rick Rubin for the upcoming follow-up album, “Closer Than Together,” which the Avetts describe in a press release as typically personal while at the same time “(wandering) inevitably into hallways both social and political.” The four singles released so far feature the typical Avetts formula: earnest lyrics, driving rhythms and a deep understanding of roots music past and present.

Also, be sure to show up early. Boston soul/funk/R&B hybrid Lake Street Dive, featuring jaw-dropping singer Rachael Price, will open in support of sixth studio album “Free Yourself Up” — worth the admission price alone if you ask this reporter.
