Shinsei Sushi

Overall rating ()

Food: I ordered a bento box ($15.95 for lunch) with two choices. Diners are able to choose from a list of 14 items. I decided on teriyaki salmon and a California roll. The bento is served with miso soup, house salad, two pieces of gyoza and steamed rice. (I asked for extra salad in place of the rice.) Each is a small portion, but the entire bento box is likely enough food for two people.

The salmon was moist and flaky, as it should be, and covered with a thin teriyaki glaze and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. The California roll (10 pieces) is probably the best in Bend, with a generous amount of crab complemented with small pieces of cucumber and avocado.

While the bento box is an expensive lunch, Shinsei is consistent. The food is fresh, hot (or cold) and served in generous portions.

Service: On this day, not so good. I asked for hot tea, but never received it. After my order arrived, no one checked back, and I had to ask for my check. That is not the norm, however; service is usually quick, courteous and accurate.

Atmosphere: Modern, sleek decor. With recent renovations, the restaurant is more spacious.
