This is the time of year when people start to think about redesigning or remodeling their kitchens. 2018 gave a nod to the ‘80s with brass kitchen accents and the farmhouse look with shiplap details and two-tone cabinetry.
— This year the new metal color is pewter and gunmetal. Kitchen faucets, cabinet handles, etc. are moving in that direction as they coordinate well with a variety of other metals, including the new, sophisticated black stainless appliances.
— Open kitchen shelving has been hot for several years and the trend continues to grow. If you are someone who can keep clutter to a minimum, open shelves may work for you. If not, you may want to rethink this trend and consider closed cabinets. Further, Central Oregon is such a dusty place to live (think of all that crushed lava rock on the roads) that having open shelving will guarantee your dishes and decorations will continually be dusty.
— Traditional is trending again — wallpaper, gold fixtures, and beautiful wood furniture. Elegant drapes or Roman shades are a great way to warm up those kitchen windows.
Hand-in-hand with traditional is the vintage vibe. Whether it’s adding an antique find from a funky shop or a piece from your mom or grandmother, these are pieces that add flavor, interest and a bit of nostalgia to your home.
Color is back! After years of white kitchens, a splash of color is coming back. Maybe it’s in a seat cushion on a counter stool, or a fabric valance over the window, or by adding a surprise piece of artwork on the wall — color warms the kitchen.
Color is also making a comeback in boldly painted cabinets — deep and rich or bright and sassy colors make a strong statement!
Brick has been trending heavily for a few years and isn’t showing any slowdown. It pairs well with a traditional style and can warm up a contemporary look with its rough edges and large grout joints. And it makes for a great backsplash.
Take inspiration from the new trends to update your kitchen for 2019, but remember to consider the rest of your home’s finishes so all the elements work well together. Ultimately, whether you’re just adding some updated splashes or a complete kitchen remodel, you want your home to work as a whole. An interior designer can help you take the first step.
