TRIATHLON

Bend woman shines in Ironman — Heather Jackson, a professional triathlete from Bend, was the top U.S. finisher and fifth overall in the Elite Women’s division of the 2019 Ironman World Championship. The race was staged Saturday in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and comprised a 2.4-mile swim a 112-mile bike and a 26.2-mile run. Jackson finished in 8 hours, 54 minutes, 44 seconds in her fourth career top-five finish as a pro in Kona. Former Bend resident Linsey Corbin, of Missoula, Montana, was the second American woman to finish; she was 10th overall in the women’s division in 9:09:06. Germany’s Anne Haug was first among the women, earning her first Kona victory with a time of 8:40:10. The winner in the Elite Men’s division was Jan Frodeno, also of Germany, in 7:51:30. American Timothy O’Donnell was second among the men in 7:59:40.

Area club lists November tryouts — The North Pacific Juniors Volleyball Club will host tryouts next month in Bend for girls ages 11 to 18. The tryouts will be held at Bend Hoops, 1307 NE First St. The tryout sessions are scheduled as follows: Nov. 4, 13/14s (travel), 4:30-8:30 p.m.; Nov. 5, 13/14s (local), 4:30-8:30 p.m.; Nov. 6, 11/12s (travel and local), 4:30-8:30 p.m.; Nov. 18, 15/16s (travel), 4:30-9 p.m.; Nov. 19, 15/16s (local), 4:30-9 p.m.; and Nov. 20, 17/18s (travel), 4:30-9 p.m. For more information or to register for NPJ tryouts, go to npjvolleyball.com.

RUGBY

COCC falls to Oregon Tech — The Central Oregon Community College Bobcats dropped a home rugby match to Oregon Tech on Saturday, losing 32-14 at Mazama Field. COCC was awarded a seven-point penalty try, and the Bobcats also got a five-point try from Baylor Johnson and a two-point conversion kick from Skyler Paulson. Johnson was voted the COCC man of the match. The Bobcats play at home again this week when they face Western Oregon University on Saturday. Kickoff at COCC is set for 1 p.m.
