SALEM — With the Mountain Valley Conference championships less than two weeks away, Bend High’s Lava Bears got in a successful tuneup Wednesday at the Creekside Cross Classic.

Bend freshman Olive Nye was the first to cross the finish line in the girls race, covering the 5,000-meter course at Creekside Golf Course in 18 minutes, 15.9 seconds. Juniors Alice McKnight (19:53.2), Allie Wilber (20:17.5) and AnneMarie Colvin (20:34.6) all also had top-20 finishes to help the Lava Bears edge Philomath 74-83 for first place in the team scoring.

“It was a good opportunity to try a new race at a new meet, and to get another race in before districts,” said Bend coach Lisa Nye.

Sisters also had a strong showing, placing seventh as a team with two top-10 finishers. Freshman Ella Thorsett (18:19.1) took second place and senior Kate Bowen (19:06.7) came in sixth.

In the boys race, Outlaws juniors John Peckham (16:01.2) and Will Thorsett (16:04.2) finished 1-2 to help the Sisters team finish second behind Philomath. Racing without top runner Bennet Jackson, who is nursing an ankle injury, Bend High placed fourth as a team, with junior Jakob Knox (16:27.8) finishing fourth.
