Disney Plus series about guide dogs for the blind in Oregon is heartwarming holiday viewing

There is no shortage of TV to watch during this holiday season, but you’d have to hunt pretty hard to find anything more heartwarming than the new Disney Plus documentary series, “Pick of the Litter.” The six-episode series, adapted from the 2018 documentary of the same name, follows the process of dogs being raised as puppies, then trained at a Guide Dogs for the Blind facility.
Guide Dogs for the Blind is a nonprofit that works to offer training for dogs that assist people who are blind, or who have low vision. In the first episode of “Pick of the Litter,” we hear about the mission or the organization, which has campus locations in San Rafael, California, and in Boring, Oregon.
“It’s really hard to become a guide dog,” as Chris Benninger, CEO and president of Guide Dogs for the Blind, says. Though the pups all look adorable, not every animal has the physical and behavioral abilities to pass the test to become a guide dog.
“Pick of the Litter,” which takes place in California, tells the story of six dogs, Tartan, Tulane, Pacino, Paco, Amara and Raffi, as they take the journey to see whether they have the right stuff to be guide dogs.
Will they make it, or will they be “career-changed,” which is the Guide Dogs for the Blind term for dogs that don’t make the cut?
I dare anybody not to get a little choked up watching the first and second episodes, in which volunteer puppy raisers talk about their hopes for the dogs they’ve taken in. The puppy raisers include a couple who have children with Autism spectrum disorder, a young person who is transgender and says the puppy is also “kind of like an emotional support dog,” a woman who has raised more than 20 dogs for the organization and more.
“Pick of the Litter” is clear-eyed and touching in showing how these puppy raisers form a bond with the dogs, but also hope their dogs pass evaluations, which means they move on to the next step, formal training at a Guide Dogs for the Blind campus.
The second episode of “Pick of the Litter,” was released Friday, and the rest of the episodes will premiere on Fridays until early February.
