The restaurant delivery service Uber Eats will launch in Bend on Thursday with about 30 local eateries participating.

Uber said in a press statement that the service will be active at 10 a.m. Thursday. Users have to download a free app, which is separate from Uber’s ride-hailing service app.

Uber Eats will be available for downtown, the Orchard District, Old Farm District, River West, Larkspur, Century West, Mountain View, Awbrey Butte and Old Bend neighborhoods, according to Uber. Consumers will find restaurant menus inside the app and, Uber notes, prices and offers may differ from what the restaurant offers outside Uber Eats.

Consumers will pay a booking fee, $4.99 in Bend. Uber Eats uses dynamic pricing, in which fees go up during busy times, in certain markets but doesn’t plan to do so in Bend, at least initially, spokesman Nathan Hambley said. “It may change at some point in the future,” he said.

Through its agreement with the restaurants, Uber Eats also takes a percentage of the order. Some of the restaurants participating in the launch are Boxwood Kitchen, Pastini Pastaria, Hola! and Barrio.

Drivers will be paid according to the time and distance of their trip, Hambley said. More than 100 couriers will be available for the launch in Bend, he said. While there is some overlap with Uber, other drivers work only for Uber Eats, which has less stringent vehicle and age requirements, he said. The minimum age to drive for Uber Eats is 18.
