Five people floating the Deschutes River were rescued near La Pine State Park on Sunday.

The five people entered the river in inner tubes at Tetherow’s boat launch, but the current swept them into a partially submerged tree and trapped them there, according to a news release from the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District. One of the tubers was trapped under the tree and kept afloat by a life jacket while the rest were holding onto the tree to stay afloat, according to the release.

The group was rescued upstream of La Pine State Park by firefighters from the district at about 1 p.m. on Sunday and treated for minor injuries and hypothermia.

The rescue was the third incident on the Deschutes River since Thursday, according to the release. On Thursday, firefighters responded to a report of a missing swimmer near the Snow Goose boat launch, and Sunriver resident Allan Periman’s body was discovered about 500 yards downstream. On Saturday, first responders were called to a canoe trapped on a log jam near Pringle Falls, and investigators are still searching for the owner or potential victims of the canoe incident, according to the release.

People looking to float the river should avoid alcohol, be mindful of cold water and remember to always wear a life jacket, according to the release.
