OSU-Cascades names dining and academic building Obsidian Hall

A central building on Oregon State University-Cascades’ campus has finally received a name: Obsidian Hall.

According to an OSU-Cascades press release, the name was chosen over the summer out of 13 submissions, after staff and students were asked to enter suggestions based on Central Oregon’s natural landscape. Obsidian is a type of volcanic rock that’s common locally, as lava flows shaped the natural landscape.

Obsidian is also black — one of OSU’s colors, along with orange — and Obsidian Hall has black accents and trim.

Signs for the previously unnamed building went up last week, according to OSU-Cascades spokesperson Christine Coffin.

Obsidian Hall was built in 2016 along with the rest of OSU-Cascades’ campus and includes the Beaver Dam dining hall and coffee shop, four classrooms and administrative offices.
