Ranching standoff — The case of an FBI agent accused of lying about firing shots that missed a militia leader who participated in the armed takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge has gone to a jury. Prosecutors and defense lawyers for W. Joseph Astarita made closing arguments Thursday and that a jury of three women and nine men began deliberating Thursday afternoon. Astarita is charged with making false statements and obstruction of justice after telling investigators he did not fire two shots that missed Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, a key figure in the group that seized the refuge in 2016 while protesting the imprisonment of two ranchers. Astarita has pleaded not guilty and denies firing the shots. The errant shots came as Finicum left his pickup while authorities tried to arrest him. Oregon State Police fatally shot Finicum seconds later.
Family found — A mother and two children reported missing have been found a couple miles from their home in southern Oregon. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says a resident found the three hiding in a brushy area on his property Thursday afternoon. They were hungry and thirsty, but appeared otherwise fine. The mother and her daughters, ages 6 and 7, walked away from their home Tuesday morning and failed to return. Concerned relatives said the mother had shown signs of mental illness.
Transgender bathroom suit — An Oregon woman and her son have dropped a lawsuit that sought to mandate that students use bathrooms matching their gender at birth. The lawsuit was filed in May against the Sutherlin School District in southwestern Oregon. The mother argued that her son — identified as “T.B” in the lawsuit — was embarrassed when a transgender student walked into the boys’ bathroom while he was using a urinal. Attorney Ray Hacke says his clients dropped the lawsuit because recent court decisions in similar cases haven’t gone their way, and the district had agreed to improve privacy in the school bathrooms, including providing walls around urinals and showers.
