Kimmel and Guillermo: Related or not?

Q: Please settle an argument. On “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” is Guillermo the announcer related to Kimmel?
— Sue Keller, via email
A: No, other than as employee and employer. Guillermo Rodriguez is the security guard for the ABC show’s parking lot, apart from his on-air duties that came to be gradually. The confusion here may be that Kimmel’s late uncle Frank Potenza also was a security guard for the program and appeared regularly on it.
Q: What happened to “Madam Secretary”? Will it be back?
— Charlotte Wolff, Boynton Beach, Florida
A: It will. CBS typically hasn’t repeated the Tea Leoni-starring political drama in the summer, and it was missing for a chunk of the past television season (which we know from our mail that its fans noticed). However, it has been renewed for a fifth year, and it will return Oct. 7 in the end-of-Sunday-night slot that it’s been holding lately.
Q: I am a big fan of Joe Lando of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” Could you please tell me what TV shows or movies he is in now?
— Lynn Mancino, Andover, Connecticut
A: The most recent projects the actor has completed are the comedy-drama film “The Untold Story” and the TV movie “Paloma’s Flight,” both of which are planned as 2019 releases. Lando actually has stayed reasonably active since his “Dr. Quinn” days, which technically ended in 1998, though there were a couple of “movie” sequels in which he reprised the role of Sully.
He had other series roles in “Higher Ground,” “Wildfire” and “The Secret Circle,” and other films he’s done in recent years have included the horror tale “Freshwater” and the action sequel “Sniper: Ultimate Kill.”
Q: One of the things I enjoyed most about the latest version of “Dallas” was the casting of Emma Bell. Has she one any other projects since then?
— John Ryder, via email
A: The actress, who played a character also named Emma on the TNT continuation of the original serial, came into that show after a stint on AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” She’s done guest-star work since, on series including “American Horror Story,” “Lucifer,” “Designated Survivor,” “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” and “Rizzoli & Isles.”
Bell also had a notable lead role in “Different Flowers,” an independent film that’s been making the rounds on Showtime’s channels in recent months. It casts her as a woman who skips out on her wedding and gets to know herself by getting to know her sister (Hope Lauren) better. The picture’s producers include “Cheers” alum Shelley Long, who also plays the siblings’ grandmother.
Q: I remember that Charles Bronson did a TV series before he became a movie star. What was it called?
— Rich Bennett, Norman, Oklahoma
A: He actually had a couple of shows. In the late 1950s, “Man With a Camera” made him a television leading man as he played — OK, see if you can guess before we get there — a man with a camera! The character was a freelance photographer working in New York after using his skills for military service.
Such hit movies as “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Great Escape” elevated Bronson’s big-screen stature in the early 1960s, but he came back to television during the 1963-64 season as a star of the Western “The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters.” After that, except for the occasional series guest shot (“Rawhide,” “The Big Valley,” “The Fugitive,” etc.), Bronson stayed focused on film work until he did the 1977 NBC drama “Raid on Entebbe” and several police-oriented CBS movies toward the end of his career.
Q: Will “Wipeout” ever come back?
— Tony Jeffries, Worthington, Ohio
A: We tend to get this question every summer, since this typically was the season for the humorous ABC obstacle-course contest. When we spoke with co-host Jill Wagner several months ago, she told us that she still was in touch with the producers, but also that she didn’t know of any efforts to revive the show. To a certain extent, CBS’ new Kevin Hart-hosted “TKO: Total Knock Out” is filing that slot this summer … and for a more serious take on an obstacle course, there’s also NBC’s ongoing “American Ninja Warrior.”
