Three climbers at Smith Rock State Park were rescued Tuesday night after becoming stranded on a rock ledge, about 250 feet above the trail.
The climbers — Alex Chmiel, 24, of Portland, Stewart Reiswig, 34, of Portland, and Connor Enos, 24, of Missoula, Montana — were on the climbing route called Wherever I May Roam when they became stuck.
Chmiel called 911 at about 8:30 p.m. to report he and his friends successfully climbed to the top of the climbing route, but after beginning their decent their rope became stuck above them and they were unable to get down, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Chmiel reported they had enough food and proper clothing for the weather, but were stranded. They are experienced climbers, but were not familiar with the climbing route and chose the wrong descent route, according to the sheriff’s office.
Ten Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers and three sheriff’s office deputies responded to the state park at about 9:40 p.m.
The search and rescue volunteers, who are part of the unit’s Mountain Rescue Team, hiked in with climbing ropes and rescue gear to work their way up to the top of the climbing route, according to the sheriff’s office.
The volunteers set up a rope system to rappel down to the stranded climbers. They helped the climbers get down to the trail below.
Nobody was injured and no medical attention was needed.
The entire rescue effort was not finished until 2:40 a.m. Wednesday due to the difficulty of working in the dark, according to the sheriff’s office.
