Where to GO! for local pastries

Ocean Rolls are a signature Bend pastry, and Sparrow Bakery, the maker of the aforementioned pastry, is Central Oregon residents’ choice for favorite local pastries.

The business was established in 2006 by two young, French-trained Portland bakers, and it quickly became a hit. Sparrow Bakery started in a small building at 50 SE Scott St., and opened its second location in NorthWest Crossing in 2014. At either location, expect to wait in a line.

“We were chosen the best because we continue to make all our products by hand, and we set ourselves apart,” said co-owner Jessica Keatman. “Bend has really pushed us to be better and do better.”

The bakery and cafe features a long list of breads, cookies, pies, cakes, torts, shortbread cookies, bagels, croissants, scones and candied puff pastry. Breakfast and lunch items are also available. The Ocean Rolls are the most popular item sold at the bakery.

“We make an average of 500 each day, Monday through Thursday, then 800 to 1,000 on the weekends,” said Keatman, who owns the restaurant with Whitney Keatman. Most days the pastry sells out.
