THIS DATE IN BASEBALL

1985 — The Major League Baseball Players’ Association went on strike.
1999 — Tony Gwynn went 4-for-5, singling in his first at-bat to become the 22nd major leaguer to reach 3,000 hits, as the San Diego Padres beat the Montreal Expos 12-10.
2002 — At 32, Robb Nen became the youngest player to record 300 saves, as San Francisco beat the Chicago Cubs 11-10.
2007 — St. Louis tied a major league record with 10 straight hits in a 10-run fifth inning, with pitcher Braden Looper and Aaron Miles getting two apiece in a 10-5 victory over San Diego.
Hernandez back on DL as Mariners rained out
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Seattle Mariners place right-hander Felix Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with biceps tendinitis in his right arm.
He had been scheduled to start at Kansas City in a game that was postponed to a traditional doubleheader Sunday. Instead, recently acquired left-hander Marco Gonzales was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and will take the open spot in the rotation.
“Felix had some inflammation in his shoulder and his shoulder is not feeling good at all,” manager Scott Servais said. “He felt it a little bit coming out his last start in Texas. He felt the next couple days. Talking it over yesterday, we thought it was best to shut him down and try to get him back feeling good again. Don’t know how long he’ll be out.”
Hernandez headed back to Seattle on Saturday. He will meet with the team doctors and undergo an MRI on Monday and other tests on his shoulder and upper biceps.
This is the second trip to the disabled list for Hernandez this season. He was sidelined from April 26 to June 23 with bursitis in his shoulder. Since his return, he was 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA in eight starts.
The Mariners acquired Gonzales from the Cardinals in exchange for outfielder on Tyler O’Neill on July 21. The intention was to have Gonzales join the rotation eventually this season, but that has been expedited with the injury to Hernandez. In two starts with the Rainiers, Gonzales was 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA.
“I felt really solid,” he said. “It’s funny. Just as I was learning everybody’s name there and feel comfortable, I get moved again.”
A former first-round pick out of Gonzaga, Gonzales missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He has made seven starts and five relief appearances at the big-league level over three seasons, posting a 4-2 record with a 5.53 ERA.
