Sunriver Music Festival — Though the classical music series kicked off its 40th season last week, much of the Sunriver Music Festival lies ahead — the Pops Concert Friday in Bend and Classical Concert III Sunday in Sunriver, to name but two. Just prior to a certain celestial event you may have heard about, Sunriver Music Festival will host a free solar talk at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the Sunriver Resort Great Hall. There, Harry Hamilton, a professor of Atmosphere Physics who retired to Sunriver in 2006 after serving as provost and senior vice president at Chapman University in Orange, California. Over complimentary coffee and pastries, Hamilton will discuss the solar eclipse, followed by a short walk to a meadow, where the Sunriver Nature Center will provide eclipse glasses for safe viewing of the eclipse. Those who show the eclipse glasses can receive $5 off Monday evening’s Solo Piano Concert by renowned musician Sean Chen, solo pianist at the Festival. Chen will also perform with the Festival Orchestra at Classical Concert IV on Wednesday. At 2 p.m. Friday, the public can observe as Chen works with four young students in a master class at Bend Church of the Nazarene. For more info, contact sunrivermusic.org or 541-593-9310.
Shakespeare in the Park — Portland’s Northwest Classical Theatre Company brings the William Shakespeare drama “Titus Andronicus” to Drake Park this eclipse weekend. Believed by many to be the Bard’s earliest drama, the play is known for its violence — but bloodshed is hard to avoid when the title character Titus Andronicus, a Roman general, gets into a vengeful pattern with the Queen of the Goths. This production has a little extra excitement going for it: The cast includes acclaimed actor Joseph Marcell, best known from his role as Geoffrey, the butler on the classic ’90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets range from $22 to $45, with a $30 VIP upgrade (includes food and drink) available. Contact: shakespearebend.com.
