REDMOND — Redmond High had climbed back from two goals down with the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half. Mountain View’s Benjamin Lyche made certain the tie did not last long.

One minute after the Panthers drew even, Lyche received a pass from Kaeden Wodke and scored to put the Cougars ahead 4-3, where the score would remain for the Cougars’ first Intermountain Conference boys soccer win of the season.

“We’re hit and miss sometimes with what we can put together,” said Mountain View coach Jerry Jimenez. “We controlled the game, but we had some defensive lapses that allowed (the Panthers) to walk in and score without a lot of buildup.”

Kevin Pfeil scored on a penalty kick in the 10th minute to give the Cougars (1-1 IMC, 2-4 overall) a 1-0 lead. Though Redmond’s Alex Lopez answered six minutes later, Mountain View scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half, as Isaac Villanueva (assisted by John Cole) and Wodke each had a goal to give the Cougs a 3-1 halftime lead.

Three minutes into the second half, Lopez scored again for the Panthers (0-2, 0-5), and Oscar Gonzalez, in his first game back from a concussion, notched the equalizer in the 50th minute.

While the Cougars escaped with the win, Redmond coach Matt Tompkins was far from disappointed in his team’s effort.

“It’s a big, giant step in the right direction for us,” Tompkins said. “Man, our guys stepped up and made it tough. … I couldn’t be more proud of our guys and the heart they showed.”
