Marinus “Junior” Newhouse

Marinus “Junior” Newhouse was born on December 11th, 1924, in Oregon City, Oregon. He was the only child of Marinus and Amelia Newhouse.

He grew up in Oregon City, his family owned the Newhouse chicken hatchery in Oregon City. Junior worked in the hatchery with his father up until the late 1940s when they sold the business and moved to Terrebonne Oregon.

Even before they moved to Terrebonne, Junior showed interest in building and fixing things. He built the family’s first TV while in Oregon City and later, in Terrebonne, studied and completed his Radio, Television and Servicing Certification.

Over the following years he repaired and serviced televisions for the local community.

Although Junior enjoyed this, it wasn’t his true passion. Junior would spend his spare time working in the barn designing and building things to make people’s lives easier. He made several inventions that were targeted toward this, but his true calling came in designing and building farm equipment for the local farming communities.

Some of his earliest designs included the Newhouse Bale Elevator and Side Loader.

Junior’s father realized that this was Junior’s true calling and so, they sold the farm in Terrebonne and in 1953, they purchased a place in Redmond that had a larger shop for Junior to work in. This place was where Newhouse Manufacturing truly came into being and it is the same location that it is in today.

Over the following decades, Junior continued to design and build various equipment for the farming community; as the local farming changed, so did Newhouse. Over the years, Junior built many pieces of equipment for different areas of farming including the hay, potato, mint, garlic, cattle, onion and essential oils industries.

He is particularly known for his contributions to the mint industry. Newhouse Manufacturing was, and is, the leader in distillation equipment for the mint farming community.

Junior died at his home on the morning of June 14th, 2017.

He is survived by his cousins and the men and women of Newhouse Manufacturing, whom he felt was his family; all of the employees of Newhouse feel the same.
