SUNRIVER — Rod Perry carded a 2-under-par 70 at Crosswater Club on Tuesday to grab a three-stroke lead heading into the final round of the PGA Professional Championship.
Perry, from Port Orange, Florida, and the 2013 champion of this tournament, sank a 22-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to cap a bogey-free round and extend his advantage over Matt Dobyns, of Glen Head, New York, who recorded a 71 on Tuesday to head into Wednesday’s final round with a three-day 211. Dobyns takes aim at a third PGA Professional Championship after winning in 2012 and 2015. Mike Small, the men’s golf coach at the University of Illinois, and Jamie Broce, the coach at the University of Toledo, are tied for third with a tournament total 212.
The tournament’s defending champion, Rich Berberian, the director of instruction at Vesper Country Club in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, who entered the day tied for the lead, went bogey-quadruple-bogey to round out the front nine holes and head into Wednesday’s final round in a tie for 18th place at even par.
The field of 99 players was trimmed to 71 for Wednesday’s final round, with the cut landing at 5 over.
The low 20 scorers earn berths to the 99th PGA Championship — the final major tournament on the PGA Tour — which begins Aug. 10 at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.
Last week’s Oregon Open Invitational champion, Russell Grove, from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, is six strokes off the lead after shooting a 73 for the third round. Grove is at 1 under for the tournament.
Karen Paolozzi, from Atlanta, advanced to the final round of the PGA Professional for the third straight year with a three-day score of 4-over 219.
Wednesday’s final round tees off at Crosswater at 8:15 a.m., and the leaders begin at 1:01 p.m.
