BASEBALL

OSU completes sweep — Oregon State starter Jake Thompson allowed a season-high nine hits over 6 1⁄3 innings, but California stranded eight runners on base as the Beavers swept the three-game series with a 10-2 win Sunday afternoon in Corvallis. Thompson (10-0), who allowed two runs and saw his ERA rise to 1.32, struck out six and walked one. Tyler Malone went 2-for-2, including a two-run single that capped a five-run fifth inning for Oregon State (38-4 overall, 21-3 Pac-12), which won its fifth straight heading into a three-game series at Oregon beginning Thursday.

Ducks closer falters — Oregon freshman closer Kenyon Yovan gave up five runs in the final two innings and Washington State rallied for a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Washington. Yovan (1-1), who has 13 saves, came in with the Ducks (26-17 overall, 9-12 Pac-12) leading 5-1 and proceeded to put five of the first six batters he faced on base as the Cougars (22-22, 8-13) closed the gap to 5-4. In the ninth, Yovan gave up a two-run, two-out double to Justin Harrer to end the game and give the Cougars the series win. Yovan’s ERA skyrocketed from 0.74 to 3.90. The Ducks head north to face Portland in a Tuesday nonleague game before hosting Oregon State in a three-game Civil War series beginning Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Small ball gives Ducks 9-inning victory — Danico Mercado led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double, advanced to third on Madi Bishop’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Gwen Svekis’ sacrifice fly to center field to give the No. 5 Ducks a 2-1 win over No. 2 Florida State on Sunday in Eugene. The Ducks (44-6) swept the three-game series against the Seminoles (48-6-1). Oregon did not get a runner on base until Sammi Rhodes’ one-out single in the fifth inning. Rhodes stole second base and tied the game at 1-1 when pinch hitter Miranda Elish’s single was misplayed in center field. Reliever Maggie Balint (19-3) struck out four in two hitless innings for the Ducks, who close out the Pac-12 season with three games at last-place Stanford beginning Thursday.

Beavers blanked by Utes — Oregon State’s bid for a three-game sweep of No. 10 Utah was thwarted Sunday as three Utes pitchers combined to shut out the Beavers 6-0 in their final home game of the season. Oregon State (27-23 overall, 8-13 Pac-12) managed just four hits, including two by Jessica Garcia. Senior pitcher Taylor Cotton, the complete-game winner in the first two games of the series, lasted just two innings in Sunday’s game and left trailing 2-0; her record fell to 13-8. Kay Kay Fronda was 3-for-3 with a home run for Utah (33-11, 13-6). Oregon State finishes Pac-12 play with a three-game series at California starting Thursday.

BASKETBALL

No timetable for Kerr’s return — The spinal cord leak procedure Golden State coach Steve Kerr had Friday at Duke University went well according to Warriors general manager Bob Myers, but there is no timetable for his return. Kerr had back surgery about two years ago and has been dealing with complications. Assistant Mike Brown took over as acting coach for Game 3 of the first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers. Myers said Sunday that doctors do not even have a timeline for Kerr’s recovery. He added Kerr is still in a “gray area,” so no one knows when he will be able to return to the sidelines.

CYCLING

Gaviria moves into Giro lead — Fernando Gaviria won a bunch sprint at the end of the third stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday to claim his first Grand Tour victory and take the leader’s pink jersey from Andre Greipel. Gaviria, from Colombia, leads Greipel by nine seconds in the overall standings after the final stage in Sardinia.
